Iran to 'revise' oil sales to six EU countries: report

Posted:

Iran said today it would "revise" its oil sales to six EU countries in retaliation for a staggered EU ban on its petroleum exports, the website of state broadcaster IRIB reported.

"Today the ambassadors of some European countries were called in by the foreign ministry, where it was insisted to them that Iran will revise its oil sale to these countries," IRIB reported without giving further details.

The countries targeted were France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain, it said. Iran has previously threatened to cut off oil supplies to EU countries.

But a diplomat from one of the six EU countries whose ambassadors were summoned by the Iranian foreign ministry told AFP on condition of anonymity that the oil issue "was not discussed."

Dozens killed in fire at prison in Honduras

Officials are investigating the cause of the blaze but two theories are that it was triggered by rioting prisoners or by an electrical short-circuit, he said.

The facility held at least 800 inmates and is located 140 kilometres north of the Central American country's capital, Tegucigalpa.

It is feared that many inmates escaped during the fire, said Hector Ivan Mejia, spokesman for the government's security secretariat.

Radio reports from Comayagua said dozens of prisoners were burned beyond recognition as they were trapped in their cells.

The reports said the prison was destroyed by the flames.

Radio Globo, a station in Comayagua, said the death toll exceeded 200, but Honduran authorities would neither confirm nor deny this account.

Mexican schoolgirl brings hand grenade to class

Posted:

A nine-year-old girl took a hand grenade to an elementary school in Morelos, a state in central Mexico, authorities said.

Administrators at the school in the city of Cuautla called the emergency response number and told operators they had an explosive device.

Army troops, law enforcement agents from various federal, state and municipal departments, firefighters and emergency management office personnel went to the Otilio Montano school.

School administrators handed over the grenade to emergency personnel.

Several fourth-grade students told teachers that a classmate had a bomb, prompting school personnel to search students' belongings, school administrators said.

The grenade, which still had the fuse in it, was found in the girl's backpack, school administrators said.

Investigators are trying to find out where the grenade came from and how the girl ended up with the military weapon.

Army specialists are working to determine if the grenade is active.

Iran to unveil nuclear achievements today

Posted:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will unveil "some nuclear achievements" Wednesday, according to an announcement on Iran's presidential website.

"In the presence of the president, some new and worthwhile achievements of the country's nuclear scientists in the field of atomic energy will be unveiled" on Wednesday, Xinhua reported the announcement as stating.

"The disclosure of these achievements will display the extraordinary capability of Iranian young scientists and their nuclear knowledge to the world," it added.

The projects will show Iran's adherence to the slogan of "nuclear energy for all and nuclear weapons for none".

On Saturday, Ahmadinejad said Iran would announce new "big" nuclear achievements in days.

Addressing a large crowd of people gathered at Tehran's Azadi Square on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the Islamic revolution, the Iranian president said: "In the following days, the world will witness the inauguration of several big achievements in nuclear fields."

On Sunday, local Mehr news agency quoted an informed source as saying that Fordo nuclear enrichment facility will become fully operational over the next few days.

The start of the nuke work at the Fordo site has increased international fear as the West suspects that Iran's uranium enrichment may be meant for moving closer to the ability to make nuclear weapons.

Iran, however, insists that its nuclear programme is only for the purpose of peaceful use.

When a footman got a Valentine's card from Diana

Posted:

A footman serving the British royal family 23 years ago - and who had not been lucky in love - got the surprise of his life when he received a Valentine's Day card from Princess Diana.

Addressed "To George" in a pink envelope, the card had a picture of hearts and a teddy bear, under which a printed message read: "Hey Valentine! Not many men will receive a Valentine's card from Princess Diana...", and inside it continued: "...and you're one of them." The card was sent by the princess in 1989 when she was still married to Prince Charles.

The gesture was to show that while George may have been unlucky in love, the princess still cared about him, the Daily Express reported. The princess also added in her own hand: "To George, from Diana!"

The surname of the man named George has not been revealed. The card, which George kept until his death, is now being sold by his family for 8,000 pounds.

Grenade bounces back at bomber

Iranian has both legs blown off after throwing a bomb at Bangkok police

A bungling Iranian bomber blew off his own legs when he hurled a grenade at Thai police outside a Bangkok school -- which bounced off a tree and then exploded at his feet.

It came after he had blown up his own home and then hurled a grenade at a taxi driver who would not accept him as a passenger.

Three blasts
Police said the first explosion happened at a house in the Ekamai area in central Bangkok, which the three Iranians were believed to have rented for a month.

Two men managed to escape the explosion that severely damaged the house, according to police, but a third man who suffered minor injuries tried to hail a taxi. When the taxi refused to stop for him, he threw at least one bomb at it.

There was a third explosion when the same man then attempted to throw another bomb at police, but missed.
He is said to be receiving emergency treatment in hospital. Thai media said that an identity card found nearby indicated the man could be of Iranian origin.

A police forensics team was examining the house and reports said that police used a high pressure water cannon to defuse another explosive found there.

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra urged the public to remain calm.

Four people, three men and one woman, were injured in the explosions which come the day after Israeli diplomats were targeted in simultaneous car bombings, also believed to have been carried out by Iran.

Thailand has rarely been a target for foreign terrorists, although a domestic Muslim insurgency in the country's south has involved bombings of civilian targets.

Israel and the US warned their citizens to be alert in the capital, but Thai authorities said the country appeared to have been a staging ground but not the target of any attack.

It comes a day after Israeli diplomats were targeted in simultaneous bomb plots in India and Georgia, which were also blamed on Iran.

A bomb attached magnetically to a car in New Delhi exploded and injured the wife of an Israeli official and two bystanders.

Officials in Georgia said an explosive device was attached to the bottom of a diplomat's car in the capital Tbilisi, but was found and defused before it detonated.
