| Posted: 19 Jan 2012 07:00 PM PST Digital Trends - Imagine just prior to the holiday season supplies of Appleâs iPhone ran dry. Youâd been hoping to treat yourself to the latest 4S device, or buy one for a friend or relative, but you canât find the smartphone anywhere. Worse still, thereâs no word when they might be returning to stores. If this happened, would you instead take a look at the competition? Examine some of the Android offerings, for example? Or would you just wait until Appleâs device returned to stores, even though it could be a couple of weeks before it happens, or even a month? |
| Is '5G' mobile broadband just around the corner? IMT-Advanced explained (Digital Trends) Posted: 19 Jan 2012 02:30 PM PST Digital Trends - With Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint racing to bring 4G LTE services to customers (and T-Mobile having long marketed its hot-rodded HSPA+ as 4G technology) it might seem the 4G mobile broadband is on the verge of going mainstream. But what if we said these technologies were really just a sort of â4G Lite,â and the real 4G was just around the corner â" and up to 10 times faster than what mobile operators are touting as 4G today. | Virgin Mobile to begin throttling data speeds beginning March 23 (Digital Trends) Posted: 19 Jan 2012 07:57 AM PST Digital Trends - Like so many wireless carriers, Sprint subsidiary Virgin Mobile will soon begin throttling the data speeds of those who use the most data on its âunlimitedâ data plans. Currently, Virgin Mobile users who have used more than 2.5GB of data in Dec. 2011 are being sent to a mobile site that warns them that, beginning March 23, 2012, any data they use in a month over the 2.5GB limit will be slowed down to 256Kbps. We donât currently have a Virgin Mobile handset to test, but we suspect that typical data rates are around 1Mbps, or four times the reduced data speed. |
| Facebook Users Respond to 'Shut Down Facebook' SOPA/PIPA Protests (ContributorNetwork) Posted: 19 Jan 2012 05:20 PM PST ContributorNetwork - In response to the blacked-out internet search pages and blogs that blanketed much of the web Wednesday, Facebook users couldn't help but notice one glaring fact: There was no "closed" sign in sight, all systems were go (well, as much as they ever are on Facebook), and, aside from much traffic from Facebook users in response to the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA), it was business as usual. Virtual farms were tended, pics of kittens posted, and YouTube videos peppered the walls of millions of users around the world, in spite of the uproar elsewhere about SOPA and PIPA. |

While it was also reported that these comments were possibly made in jest which was lost in the translation, the working conditions of Foxconn employees are certainly no joking matter. |
