In a spirited defence of the government in the price-rise debate in Parliament, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that it was wrong to blame the government for inflation. Mr Mukherjee said the government was taking adequate measures to check inflation.

In the latest exchange of blows in the war over the Mullaperiyar dam, the Kerala government has taken Tamil Nadu to the Supreme Court. Kerala has asked that the level of water in the dam be kept at 120 feet. Tamil Nadu wants to raise the mark to 136 feet. Kerala has been arguing that the 116-year-old dam is in danger of collapse, particularly because several tremors have been felt in the last six months in the area where it's located.

The service tax department has frozen the bank accounts of both Air India and Kingfisher Airlines. While the loss-making national carrier owes the department approximately Rs 100 crore, Vijay Mallya's airline owes approximately Rs 70 crore. This effectively means that while both the companies collected the service tax on the air tickets they sold from their customers, they did not deposit it with the department.

An Indian-American physician here has been found guilty of $ 700,000 Medicaid fraud in which he prescribed HIV medications to patients who did not have it. Suresh Hemrajani, 58, an internal medicine physician, was convicted by a jury on charges of grand larceny and 11 counts of falsifying business records, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said.
