'Fake' nurse who treated 1,400 patients held

A 'fake' nurse in Britain who treated hundreds of patients despite allegedly not holding any medical qualifications has been arrested, a media report said Wednesday.

The 46-year-old worked at GP surgeries for about four years and was responsible for checking women for cervical cancer and administering injections to children, Daily Mail reported.

She managed to pose as a nurse in four surgeries in Chatham and Gillingham, Kent, and one in Essex.

Letters have since gone out to more than 1,400 patients within Kent and Medway Primary Care Trust who are thought to have been seen by the woman, the Mail said. Many women are now being offered repeat tests in case they have not been carried out properly.

The unnamed 'nurse' - who has been described as being of 'heavy' build with mousy brown hair - was arrested in July after she moved to Brecon, Mid Wales.

Ron Gordon, a retired California science teacher behind Odd Day wants everyone to "be awed by the odd" and the date chosen is either 9/7/2011 or 7/9/2011, with 5/7/9 being the previous odd day, and 9/11/13 being the fifth and last of the century.

"It's a little math, a little smile, a little fun. It's Odd Day," ABC News quoted him as saying.

"They're like calendar comets. You wait and wait and wait for them, and then poof, they're gone. It comes, it sparkles, it shines and then it's gone," he stated.

The Gordon family has even gone to the extent of establishing a contest for odd days with a prize jackpot of 791.10 dollars to be distributed among 7+9+11 winners, meaning 27 winners will walk away with a grand total of 29.30 dollars each.

Past winners of the odd day contest have written poems called "Odd Odes," and one retirement home in the Midwest celebrates every Odd Day by having dessert before dinner.

"I think it's a cute little way for people that don't like math to think, 'I get it. I understand this," Gordon's daughter Rachel said.

The family's next big day is 11/11/11, which has been dubbed as "Once Upon a Day" and will be celebrated with a short-story writing contest and a 111.11 dollars prize to be divided among 11+11+11 winners.

The U.S. and Canada will get a bonus odd day on 11/13/15.

Criminal carrying Rs.50,000 reward gunned down

A gangster carrying a reward of Rs.50,000 for his capture was Wednesday gunned down by police in Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad district, an official said

Sanjay Yadav, wanted in over 12 criminal cases, including murder and abduction, was shot dead during a gun battle with the Special Task Force (STF) and the district police in Naini area. His accomplice managed to escape.

"Acting on a tip-off, we trapped Yadav and his aide. They started firing indiscriminately at the police," police inspector Ajai Seth told reporters in Allahabad, 200 km from here.

"While Yadav was killed in the retaliatory firing, his associate fled," he said.

According to police, 38-year-old Yadav was a native of Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi district.

Two firearms and several cartridges were recovered from his possession.

Man surrenders after murdering seven in China

A man in China has surrendered to the police after allegedly murdering seven relatives of a friend in Jiangsu province

The 32-year-old suspect, surnamed Zheng from Guanyun County, confessed that he used a 20-cm-long knife to kill his friend's parents, daughter, aunt, uncle, niece and another relative in Xuyi County Saturday night, the Jiangsu provincial department of public security stated.

He surrendered Sunday night, police said.

According to the authorities, Zheng said he wanted to stab his friend, surnamed Wang to take a revenge for an alleged affair Wang had with his wife. But Wang wasn't home that night.

Zheng and Wang had been friends, and they had collaborated in robberies, which led to Zeng serving one year in jail in 2009. After being released, he learned of the alleged affair.

Newly wed, mother killed in Britain

A newly-wed woman and her mother have been stabbed to death while a woman related to them was wounded in a British town

The two women and another 19-year-old woman were attacked Sunday at a house in Thame, Oxon, Daily Express reported Monday. The male attacker also took away a young boy at knifepoint.

The 28-year-old bride lived in the house with her new husband, her mother, father and her two young daughters thought to be from a previous relationship.

The bride and her mother were stabbed in the neck and chest. Both died at the site.


Hair salon's battered woman advert evokes outrage

A hair salon in Canada has been attacked and its owners threatened with life for using a model, posing as a domestic violence victim, to highlight how its services could turn even a beaten woman look beautiful

Edmonton business Fluid Salon said they had made her the 'hottest battered woman' ever and used the tagline 'Look good in all you do', Daily Mail reported.

Released on a New York blog, the advertisement shows the well-groomed but bruised woman, as her boyfriend or husband is all set to gift her an expensive diamond necklace.

Salon owner Sarah Cameron said the advert reflects society and should be considered art.

Rare surgery involving the removal of 11 tumours performed in Abu Dhabi

A rare surgery, which required removal of 11 uterine tumors weighing about three kilograms, has been successfully performed at an Abu Dhabi hospital

The main difficulty of the operation was the removal of large number of tumors without a hysterectomy (removal of the entire uterus).

The surgery was performed at Al Noor Hospital by Nidal Al-Attiyah, consultant obstetrics and gynaecology, on a British national.

She said that the challenge was in conducting the surgery to remove a large number of tumors while maintaining the uterus intact, noting that the largest tumor removed weighted approximately two kg.

Al-Attiyah added that the patient suffered from severe abdominal swelling that the uterus size was similar in that of a seven month pregnancy.

The operation lasted less than an hour. The 11 different-sized tumors were excised without the need for blood transfusion, while maintaining the uterus intact for future pregnancies.

Indian-origin doc accused of groping patient says 'she tried to seduce me'

An Indian-origin doctor in England, who has been accused groping a patient during a physical examination, defended himself saying that she tried to seduce him, according to a hearing

Dr Subramaniam Balu, 53, allegedly lifted a patient's bra and cupped her breasts as he checked her for symptoms of a bad cold at his surgery in Dudley, West Midlands in September 2008.

But after the patient made a formal complaint against him at the General Medical Council in Manchester, he claimed the 35-year-old patient had tried to seduce him.

However, later in a note the doctor allegedly faked an account in which he claimed the patient, 'noticeably showed herself and lifted her clothes.'

He also stated that she had tried to seduce him by 'pushing her chest forward' at him in a provocative way and then putting her 'arched buttocks' in his face.

If the panel rules against him he could be struck off.

The hearing was told the woman was 'shocked and disgusted' by the doctor's counter-claims.

"At no time were my actions as described by Dr Balu. As far as I'm concerned they are total lies," the Daily Mail quoted the woman as saying.

The hearing continues.


Meet 94-yr-old bride who married 84-yr-old after leaving hospital bed!

She is 94 and was admitted to the hospital for two days. Still she was so determined to marry her 84-year-old toy boy that she got up out of the hospital bed and walked down the aisle.

Vi Stannard tied the knot with Derek Walker on Saturday, making her way to the church near their home in Harkstead in a wheelchair after she was injured in a fall last Thursday.

Stannard, however, had to return to Ipswich Hospital for further treatment after a happy reception for family and friends.

"She fell on her side when we were down at the river in Flatford on Thursday," the Daily Mail quoted Walker as saying.

"I had to take her into hospital. But we still went on with the wedding and it was brilliant.

"Vi was very brave about the whole thing and the hospital consultant was satisfied as long as she wasn't out for too long," he added.

Meet the dog with the world's longest ears!

This dog has no reason not to hear. One look at Harbor the black-and-tan coonhound (in pic), and you'll believe a dog can fly.

Guinness World Records has named him the possessor of the longest canine ears on the planet.
His left ear is 12.25 inches, while his right ear is even longer 13.5 inches.

The breed was developed to hunt raccoons, with the long ears said to help by sweeping scents towards the nose.



But Harbor has had a lifelong struggle with his colossal ears. As a pup, he frequently tripping over them as a puppy and rolling down the stairs.

Now though, the purebred has grown into his lengthy lugholes, which have made him a celebrity.

Owner Jennifer Wert, of Boulder, Colorado, said, "Cars will literally stop in the street to take a closer look and get a picture. Most days I forget how oddly long his ears are."

"He's a phenomenon in the world and he creates smiles wherever we go," she added.

Harbor takes the title from Tigger (13.5 inch ears), a bloodhound from Illinois, who passed away of old age two years ago.

According to Guinness World Records 2012, Harbor's ear-span is greater than the height of the world's shortest man, Junrey Balawing, who is 23.5 inches tall.

His ears are also wider than the smallest road-legal car, which is 26 inches wide.

Additionally you could comfortably fit the world's shortest dog, 6 inch long Brandy, who is also from the US, on each of Harbor's ears twice.

Rowan Atkinson bids adieu to Mr Bean

He is Rowan Atkinson's most commercially successful creation.

However, Mr Bean is unlikely to appear on our screens again in any new adventures. Atkinson (56) says he believes he is too old to play the bumbling character.

Mr Bean first blundered on to television in an ITV series which ran for five years from 1990.

Despite the derision of some critics, the programme proved a huge ratings success, with viewing figures of more than 18 million.

The character proved such a draw even in the notoriously difficult US market that two films were made of his exploits, Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie in 1997 and Mr Bean's Holiday four years ago.

However, Atkinson who describes Mr Bean as 'a child in a grown man's body' said, "I've got a feeling I probably won't play the character [Mr Bean] again.

Never say never, but I just feel I'm getting too old for it. I've always liked Mr Bean as a cartoon-like figure, who doesn't really age much."

He added, "I've always seen him as an ageless and timeless being and I'm clearly not ageless and timeless. The older I get, I feel I am less qualified to play him."

The comedian was interviewed in Australia to publicise the sequel to the spoof movie Johnny English " Johnny English Reborn.

Former US president George W Bush has told an interviewer that he experienced no sense of pleasure or jubilation following the confirmation that Osama bin Laden, the orchestrator of the deadly terror attacks on 9/11, had been killed.

The former president was "sitting in a restaurant in Dallas when the Secret Service told him that President Obama wanted to speak to him," documentary producer Peter Schnall said in an interview with CNN yesterday.
"He then learned about the assassination," Schnall explained.

Upon hearing the news, Schnall confirmed that Bush said "there was no sense of jubilation [and] certainly no sense of happiness.

"If anything, he felt that finally there was a sense of closure." Schnall's documentary for the National Geographic channel will air on the tenth anniversary of the attacks.

In the interview, Bush is questioned at length over his response to the attacks, from the first moment he learned of the attack upon the US while at an elementary school in Florida, right up to the subsequent war on terror and the incursions into Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bush's response to the attacks remains a source of deep division to this day, both politically and also socially.

The former president revealed that when he had heard that a plane had hit the World Trade Centre, he initially assumed it must have been a light aircraft and that inclement weather or something happening to the pilot had caused the crash.

Moments later, his White House Chief of Staff Andy Card, whispered in his ear that a second plane had hit the second tower and America was under attack.

Schnall admitted that a decade after the attack, the events of that day still took a toll on the former president.

"We could see in the interview that the president was very taken by the events of that day, he was very emotional," he explained.

Thai man arrested for royal insult on Facebook

Thai police yesterday said they had arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly posting pictures, audio clips and messages deemed insulting to the royal family on the social networking site Facebook. Surapak Phuchaisaeng was arrested in Bangkok, said a senior police officer at the Technology Crime Suppression Division.

Under Thailand's controversial lese majeste legislation, anybody convicted of insulting the king, queen, heir or regent faces up to 15 years in prison on each count. Surapak, who also faces related charges under the Computer Crime Act, is one of the first people arrested for insulting the monarchy since a new government took power last month.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said after her July 3 election win that the rules should not be misused, following several high-profile cases against supporters of her brother Thaksin, Thailand's fugitive former leader.

But in a sign she did not want a direct confrontation with the country's powerful elites, her government has since vowed to set up a "war room" to crack down on alleged online royal insults.

Earlier this month more than 100 international academics called on Thailand to review the tough laws, saying political abuse of the legislation is undermining human rights.

The laws have come under heavy criticism from rights groups, which have expressed concern that they have been used to suppress freedom of expression under the last government, considered close to the establishment.

In March, a webmaster was jailed for 13 years after the Internet site he ran, linked to the opposition movement, allegedly published comments insulting the monarchy.

Bomb-threat man who took 12-year-old daughter into Sydney law office is taken into custody after 12-hour standoff ends

A man who marched into a Sydney law office with his daughter and said he had a bomb in his backpack has been taken into custody after a 12-hour standoff with police. The man's 12-year-old daughter was released and reunited with her family, New South Wales police said.

She was distressed but otherwise unharmed, police said. Police did not immediately say whether explosives had been found in the man's backpack. "Towards the latter part of the time we've been here, those negotiations have started to break down and then deteriorate to a stage where police have taken action to break into the premises and take a 52-year-old man into custody," Police Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford said. "He's currently assisting police with their ongoing inquiries."

Police have not released the man's name. The man looking from a second-floor window shirtless was wearing the same kind of wig as worn in Australian courts by judges and lawyers. At one point he spat on the wig.
He had also swung a bottle like a hammer to smash a plate-sized hole in the office window and yelled through the hole. He threw the bottle, then a telephone handset, which was left dangling by its cord.

She said he asked to see someone she had never heard of. The man went upstairs briefly then returned to the reception desk and repeated his request. She repeated that she had never heard of the man.

She said he then threw a book on the desk and told her to call the unknown man and the state attorney general's department and said, "Tell them I've got a bomb in my backpack." Hor called the police as the man walked upstairs to a lawyer's office with the girl, who called him dad.

The standoff came a month after an extortionist broke into a home and fastened a fake bomb around the neck of a milliionaire's daughter. She spent 10 hours cops determined it was harmless and freed her.

Shortly after Mayawati's press conference, Julian Assange decided to respond to the Uttar Pradesh CM's jibe.



In a statement sent delivered to the media, Assange said, "I ask that Mayawati admit her error and apologise.

Should she fail to do so, she is welcome to send her private jet to England to collect me, where I have been detained against my will, under house arrest, for the last 272 days."

The statement further reads, "I would be happy to accept asylum, political asylum, in India -- a nation I love. In return, I will bring Mayawati a range of the finest British footwear."
