Iraq: Explosions kill 10 in Karbala, says official

A series of blasts hit a Shiite holy city in Iraq on Sunday, killing at least 10 people and wounding scores of others. A local resident said he feared the attacks were another attempt by Sunni insurgents to ignite sectarian violence in the country.

The Haqqani network, today considered the deadliest terror group in Afghanistan, is aided and supported by the ISI largely to promote pakistan's interests in Afghanistan against India. Based in North Waziristan in Pakistan, it is led by Jalauddin Haqqani and his son, Sirajuddin. Because of their close links to the ISI, the Pakistani army has not gone on the offensive against the Haqqanis. Infact they have only thrived operating freely from North Waziristan.

A compound in Kabul used by the US's Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) came under attack, officials said, the latest in a series of assaults in the Afghan capital. Afghan interior ministry spokesman Siddiq Siddiqui said police had heard "a couple of minutes" of gunfire from inside the Ariana Hotel compound at around 1645 GMT.
