| Pak man strangled to death 'for refusing to marry his lover' Posted: A man in Pakistan was strangled to death after he refused to marry his lover Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Muhammad Akmal said that Kashif Imran, 30, had been having an affair with Abida Sarwar and she had strangled him with her teenaged niece's help because he was refusing to marry her, reports the Express Tribune. He said that Sarwar had called Rescue 15 in the early hours of weekend and reported that there was a body in her house. The police found bruises on the dead man's neck and concluded that he had been asphyxiated with a rope. He said that Sarwar and her niece Ayesha, 16, were taken into custody for questioning. Under interrogation, Sarwar told the police she had met Imran when she moved to Usama Colony three years ago after she got married. They had started an affair, while her husband lived and worked in Dubai. She had later moved to Asim Block, where Imran used to visit her. Imran had told Sarwar that he would marry her, the SHO said, but a few days ago he had changed his tune and warned her that he was not ready for marriage and he was looking for work abroad. During weekdays, Sarwar invited him to her home and drugged his tea. While he was unconscious, she strangled him with her niece's help, the SHO said. He said that a first information report case had been registered against Sarwar and Ayesha under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code. | |||
| Two grannies wed in NY's first legal gay marriage Posted: A city official married the first gay couple in New York City to wed under the state's new law allowing same-sex marriage yesterday. Phyllis Siegel (77), and Connie Kopelov (85), were married in a chapel at the city clerk's office as a crowd of onlookers cheered. Phyllis Siegel (rear) and Connie Kopelov celebrate and show off their marriage certificate after being the first to wed at Manhattan's City Clerk's Office yesterday Hundreds of same-sex couples heard the news on Friday that they made the cut in the marriage lottery that New York state instituted for Sunday when the state's Marriage Equality Act took effect. The New York City clerk's office has been flooded with more than 2,600 requests for marriage licences since the wording on the online application was changed from 'Groom and Bride' to 'Spouse A and Spouse B.' The office could handle less than a third of those requests - gay or straight " on Sunday, according to a press statement. If all 764 weddings actually take place on Sunday, it will set a one-day record for the city. End to Army gay ban US President Barack Obama and the Pentagon's top two leaders yesterday signed the required certification attesting that the Defence Department is prepared for repeal of the military's ban on gays serving openly. "As of September 20, service members will no longer be forced to hide who they are in order to serve our country,'' Obama said in a White House statement. | |||
| Posted: Words uttered by Anders Behring Breivik, before calmly opening fire on innocent teenagers in Norway
In a series of haunting images to emerge from the tragedy, Breivik is seen dressed in the dark police uniform that won his victims' trust, brandishing a weapon as lifeless bodies float in the shallows. The bloodbath on the tiny island of Utoya has stunned Norway. Police last night said up to 98 people could have died and added that they were planning to send an unmanned submarine to search Lake Tyrifjord. Breivik (32) has been charged over the massacre and over the bombing in the government district of Oslo hours earlier, which killed seven people and will be produced in court today. Survivors described the full horror of how the killer went on his deadly rampage, killing teenagers at the youth camp. They said how the gunman mowed down victims with a machine gun before clinically shooting them in the head with a shotgun. One survivor recalled how he escaped by playing dead and hiding under victims' bodies as the gunman opened fire. As Breivik fired round upon round many aimed at people's backs as they ran away eyewitnesses said the killer screamed, "You all must die." One unidentified teenage girl said the killer gathered his victims around before opening fire. Last night, a police source said Breivik was a Right-wing extremist who had posted anti-Muslim views on Christian fundamentalist websites. Adrian Pracon, said, "People were falling dead right in front of me. The gunman was very sure, very calm and controlled. He looked like he knew what he was doing. He screamed at us, "You all must die." The Norwegian royal family and Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg paid a visit to condole the families of the victims. Stoltenberg said, "What happened at Utoya is a national tragedy. Not since World War Two has our country seen a greater crime." Hate Manifesto Cops found a 1,500 page hate manifesto written by Anders Behring Breivik. The document 2083 A European Declaration Of Independence speaks about overthrowing Europe's liberal democracies and replacing them with a pan-European conservative authority. Breivik supports a Christian Europe without large numbers of Muslims. Breivik appears to have chosen the date 2083 because it'll be the 200th death anniversary of Marx. | |||
| Four-year-old saved 21 hours after China train crash Posted: Emergency workers in eastern China yesterday rescued a young boy from the wreck of a high-speed train, nearly a full day after a collision that killed at least 35 people and injured more than 200 others south of Shanghai. The rescue of the four-year-old boy came about 21 hours after a southbound bullet train, travelling between the cities of Hangzhou and Wenzhou, was disabled by a lighting strike on a bridge and a second high-speed train plowed into the stalled streamliner. Bystanders look at rescue operations which continue on the wreckage. China has ordered an 'urgent' overhaul of rail safety "When we found him, he could still move his hands," said the firefighter, adding that cleanup efforts around the bridge where the accident took place have nearly been completed. The boy was rushed to the No. 118 Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army in the city of Wenzhou, he said. Thirty-five people have been killed and another 210 have been injured in the accident, according to officials. Authorities moved quickly to curb public anger at the wreck, with Chinese Vice-Premier Zhang Dejiang at the scene to oversee rescue operations. Three senior railway officials have been fired after the crash. China has spent billions of dollars to connect its cities with high-speed rail, but this is the second time in recent weeks a storm has been blamed for causing problems. Earlier this month, a storm-induced power failure caused a 90-minute delay on the new Beijing-to-Shanghai line. In less than four weeks of operation, power outages and other malfunctions have plagued the showcase 1,318-kilometre line. The Railways Ministry has apologised for the problems and said that summer thunderstorms and winds were the cause in some cases. It was China's worst train accident since April 2008, when a train travelling from Beijing to the eastern coastal city of Qingdao derailed and crashed into another train, leaving 72 dead and another 416 injured. |
