Happy to quit anti-corruption panel: Pawar Posted: Activists today explained why they're backing Anna Hazare's demand that an anti-corruption law cannot be drafted by the government alone. Mr Hazare, a veteran social activist, has begun an indefinite hunger fast in Delhi, to pressure the government into moving faster on the Jan Lokpal Bill. A group of eminent personalities supporting Mr Hazare say that civil society representatives must be part of the committee that works on the Bill.

We asked for more time, says govt to Anna Hazare Posted: Anna Hazare fast: In Delhi, veteran activist and Gandhian Anna Hazare is continuing with his hunger fast – he launched it on Tuesday, and says he will not eat or drink till the government proves its commitment to fighting corruption with a powerful new law - the Jan Lokpal Bill (Citizen's Ombudsman Bill).
Posted: Student organisations from the city have pledged their full support to the social activist Anna Hazare who has gone for fast unto death since yesterday with his demands over the ratification of Lokpal Bill and giving it prosecuting powers. Hazare was dismayed after Prime Minister refused to include activists in the joint committee to draft the Bill. The student wings of the city such as Bharatiya Krantikari Sanghatana (BKS), Republican Vidyarthi Sena and All India Student Association (AISA) are staging demonstrations across all the tehsils and gram shakhas of the state in support of Hazare.

Why Hazare, others oppose govt's Lokpal Bill 2010 Posted: Lokpal will not have any power to either initiate action suo motu in any case or even receive complaints of corruption from general public. The general public will make complaints to the speaker of Lok Sabha or chairperson of Rajya Sabha. Only those complaints forwarded by Speaker of Lok Sabha/Chairperson of Rajya Sabha to Lokpal would be investigated by Lokpal. This not only severely restricts the functioning of Lokpal, it also provides a tool in the hands of the ruling party to have only those cases referred to Lokpal which pertain to political opponents (since speaker is always from the ruling party).
What is the Jan Lokpal Bill, why it's important Posted: The Jan Lokpal Bill (Citizen's ombudsman Bill) is a draft anti-corruption bill drawn up by prominent civil society activists seeking the appointment of a Jan Lokpal, an independent body that would investigate corruption cases, complete the investigation within a year and envisages trial in the case getting over in the next one year.
