Chinese vase fetches $69.3 million at London auction Posted: An 18th century Chinese porcelain vase discovered when a house was cleared out has been sold at a London auction for 43 million pounds (US$69.3 million). Auctioneers Bainbridges said on Thursday that the final price of the vase far exceeded the pre-auction estimated price, which was about 1.2 million pounds. The amount was thought to be among the highest every paid for any Chinese artwork sold at auction.

Outspoken Chinese risk confinement in mental wards Posted: Xu Lindong, a poor village farmer with close-cropped hair and a fourth-grade education, knew nothing but decades of backbreaking labor. Even at age 50, the rope of muscles on his arms bespoke a lifetime of hard plowing and harvesting in the fields of his native Henan Province. But after four years locked up in Zhumadian Psychiatric Hospital, he was barely recognizable to his siblings. Emaciated, barefoot, clad in tattered striped pajamas, Mr. Xu spoke haltingly. His face was etched with exhaustion.

A device that won't let motorists fall asleep Posted: Scientists have developed a device to prevent motorists from falling asleep -- potentially saving 300,000 people from sudden deaths worldwide. The system, devised at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, involves tiny cameras that monitor eye movements which trigger an alarm when drivers seem about to nod off.
