| Burglar drops his name and contact details Posted: A burglar left behind a bag containing his name and complete contact details written inside it after breaking into a house in Britain. Not surprisingly, he was an easy catch for the police. David Hanlon left behind a police property bag that was given to him by the police after he was caught earlier in the day for an unrelated robbery. Soon after he was let off on bail, he struck at another house where he left the bag. He stole the owner's car keys and then sped off in her vehicle, Daily Express reported Thursday. Police officers spotted the bag in the garden and Hanlon proved to be easiest of arrests. Hanlon has now been jailed for four years. Bradford Crown Court was told that Hanlon had been questioned by sleuths about an unrelated burglary before being released on bail. But Hanlon broke into another house while the female occupant was asleep. The incident took place in July. Hanlon pleaded guilty Tuesday to burglary, two offences of theft of a motor vehicle and going equipped for theft. Judge Peter Benson noted: "You (Hanlon) are a persistent burglar who burgles on a grand scale." "Although there are some amateurish features to your conduct which led to you being apprehended, nonetheless you are a scourge to householders, and burglary is a very serious matter which causes great distress to people whose houses are invaded and property taken." | ||
| Most Facebook users have low self-esteem: Study Posted: Facebook is used mostly by narcissists and those with low self-esteem, says a Canadian study. These type of people use Facebook as a self-promotional tool, says psychology researcher Soraya Mehdizadeh of York University. Mehdizadeh, who extensively examined the online habits and personalities of 100 Facebook users aged 18 to 25 years old, found that individuals higher in narcissism and lower in self-esteem spent more time on the site and filled their pages with more self-promotional content. "We all know people like this. They are updating their status every five minutes and the photos they post are very carefully construed,'' she says. "The question is, are these really accurate representations of the individual or are they merely a projection of who the individual wants to be?" Mehdizadeh says she was struck by the fact that those with lower self-esteem were more apt to use this social networking tool. As part of her research, she examined five features of participants' Facebook pages for self-promotion: the 'about me' section, the main photo, the first 20 pictures on the 'view photos of me' section, notes, and status updates. Describing self-promotion by Facebook users as any descriptive or visual information that attempted to persuade others about one's own positive qualities, Mehdizadeh assessed facial expression (striking a pose or making a face) and picture enhancement (using photo editing software) in the main photo and 'view photos of me' sections. Further, she examined the use of positive adjectives, self-promoting mottos, and metaphorical quotes in the 'about me' section. Self-promotion in the notes section could include posting results from Facebook applications including 'my celebrity look-alikes,' which compares a photo of the user to celebrities, or vain online quiz results. After this, she used the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale to measure participants' self-esteem. Narcissism was assessed by using the Narcissism Personality Inventory, according to a university release. From the gender perspective, Mehdizadeh says she found that men displayed more self-promotional content in the 'about me' and notes sections, whereas women demonstrated more self-promotion in the main photo section. "I thought this was an interesting way to apply theoretical paradigms in psychology to online self-presentation, which is still a fairly new concept,'' says the Canadian researcher. "I believe the next question to be answered is whether or not the use of such websites could be used to improve one's self-esteem and overall sense of well-being. This sort of finding may have great implications in the lives of the socially anxious or depressed,'' according to the researcher. The study has been published in the journal Cyber psychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. | ||

| Britney's former bodyguard sues for sex harassment Posted: A former bodyguard has sued Britney Spears, claiming the singer repeatedly subjected him to "repeated unwanted sexual advances" and harassment. Fernando Flores filed the sexual harassment lawsuit in suburban Los Angeles on Wednesday, alleging the singer intentionally inflicted emotional distress. He is seeking unspecified damages from the Grammy Award -winner and his former employer, Advanced Security Concepts Corp. The lawsuit claims that Spears, among other things, exposed herself to Flores and summoned him to her bedroom while she was naked. The bodyguard's employment with Spears appeared to be brief, his court filings state he started working for her in February and had "exhausted his administrative remedies" with a state agency by July. Spears' publicist, Holly Shakoor, did not return e-mail messages seeking comment. A woman who answered the phone at Advanced Security Concepts declined to comment and refused to be identified. Flores' suit also claims he witnessed Spears engage in inappropriate conduct around her young sons and once borrowed his belt to discipline them. The singer remains under a court-ordered conservatorship in which her personal and financial affairs are controlled by her father and an attorney, and monitored by a judge. The conservatorship has prevented Spears from being deposed or testifying during previous cases in which she was sued. Spears (28) has frequent visits with her sons, who she had with ex-husband Kevin Federline. He has not sought any changes to their custody arrangement in recent months, court records show. | ||

| 9/11 mastermind gets a makeover Posted: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed revamps image with weight loss, but stays all evil Cuba: When he was first introduced to the world, the man alleged to have masterminded the New York terrorist attacks appeared untidy and overweight. Devout: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed appears with a contented look on his face as he poses with a copy of the Koran Now Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has presented a new picture of himself in a letter to relatives -- three stone lighter and with a long grey-flecked beard. New image The alleged terrorist kingpin who was arrested in Pakistan in 2003 also shows himself as a devout man, as he is pictured holding a copy of the Koran and wearing a traditional headdress. His new picture could also be interpreted as a homage to the leader of al-Qaeda Osama Bin Laden, to whom he now bears a strong resemblance. In a letter dated June 2009, the Guantanamo Bay detainee made an attempt to plea for absolution for his alleged crimes. He wrote in English: "All praise is due to Allah. I praise Him and seek His aid and His forgiveness and I seek refuge in Allah from our evil in ourselves and from our bad deeds." The extract was from a longer letter sent to his family accompanying the new photograph. The 45-year-old has so far only appeared at closed hearings and spends 22 hours a day in isolation at Guantanamo Bay. He arrived at the Cuba detention military camp in 2006 and since then has confessed to his role in the terrorist atrocity, according to US officials. JD Gordon, a former Pentagon spokesman who attended nearly all of his court appearances, said that Mohammed had behaved bizarrely. He said, "I think he does that deliberately to draw people in, to charm them in some way, or to influence them. It's all calculated."
