Digital Trends - Sprint’s board of directors has reportedly vetoed the company’s expected purchase of rival wireless carrier MetroPCS. An acquisition largely championed by Sprint CEO Dan Hesse and weeks in the making, the estimated $8 billion MetroPCS deal would have saddled cash-strapped Sprint with even further debt. Sprint is the nation’s third-largest wireless carrier.

Appolicious - It seems phablets are all the rage, with their larger screens and combined smartphone-tablet capabilities. With Mobile World Congress kicking off in Barcelona next week, we could see quite a few such devices taking the scene. Picking up on a trend made popular by Samsung's 5-inch Galaxy Note, both LG and Panasonic are expected to reveal a phablet at MWC this year. While other device makers are playing catch up in the phablet race, Samsung is skipping ahead to launch more connected devices, including an oven you can control with your Android smartphone.

Digital Trends - While Facebook casual gaming has helped to triple the number of gamers in the US in the past three years, new research is saying that the social gaming boom is beginning to calm down, and perhaps seeking to mature. Market research firm IHS iSuppli states that “the honeymooon’s over,” chiefly due to rising barriers to entry, increasing competition and the fact that gaming has fallen in priority for social media users.
