Sony abandons PlayStation Vita UMD Passport plan in North America (Digital Trends) Posted: 08 Feb 2012 07:31 PM PST Digital Trends - As reported by Kotaku earlier today, Sony is ditching plans to allow new Vita owners to download PSP titles that they currently own on UMD disc. Sony rolled out this program in Japan at launch during December 2011 and all Japanese owners can register their UMD titles on the Vita by paying a fee based on the value of the game, thus Japanese owners can avoid having to repurchase the titles at full cost on the PlayStation Vita digital download store. New PlayStation Vita owners in North America on February 22 will have to keep the PSP in order to access old titles or repurchase older games at full price to utilize the software on the newer handheld system.
| Americans Aren't Entitled to Have Free Cellphones (ContributorNetwork) Posted: 08 Feb 2012 04:08 PM PST ContributorNetwork - COMMENTARY | According to Time, a federal program paid $1.6 billion last year to provide free cellphones and pay monthly phone bills for low-income Americans. The money to fund the program -- which has seen a dramatic rise in its participants since 2008 -- mostly comes from the Universal Service Fund, which is a fee land-line and wireless customers pay. |

Apple's patent plea: Stop Samsung and Motorola from holding us hostage (Digital Trends) Posted: 08 Feb 2012 03:21 PM PST Digital Trends - The world of patent licensing often seems like a maze of twisty little passages, all alike, but every so often the industry stumbles into a new tunnel â" or, at least, one that seems new at first glance. Such is the case with Apple, which has asked the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to establish a set of basic principles governing so-called fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing of patented technologies included in wireless communications standards. That sentence may make many consumersâ eyes glaze over, but it boils down to this: Apple wants rules saying that if a company contributes their technology to a standard, they donât get to use that technology to beat up competitors who use that standard.
The entire history of radio in one simple infographic (Digital Trends) Posted: 08 Feb 2012 01:00 PM PST Digital Trends - In this day and age, we take the amazing technology we have for granted. Not only that, we take it for granted that technology is, and will continue to be, amazing. We can communicate with almost anyone in the world, in real-time. We can broadcast live video streams via our cell phones. We can do almost anything. And what we canât do yet, we will almost certainly be able to do in the near future.
Pay for play: Are marketers manipulating Apple's App Store rankings? (Digital Trends) Posted: 08 Feb 2012 05:30 PM PST Digital Trends - With over 500,000 apps available through Appleâs App Store, it can be daunting for developers to get their apps noticed â" let alone downloaded. Enter a recent thread on app developer site Touch Arcade, in which a poster who was recently shopping around for ways to get his app more exposure was contacted by a âmarketingâ company that promised it could break apps into the top 25 rankings in exchange for a lump sum payment â" in this case $5,000. The company in question went on to present a list of client apps that are currently sitting pretty on the list of 20 most popular free iPhone apps (8 out of 20 to be exact). Thatâs rarified air even for big-name developers. According to the poster, the company achieves its ends by utilizing outsourced bot farms to automatically download client apps (something the company freely admitted), thus moving them quickly up the rankings, at which point âhumanâ users notice them and really get the numbers up.

The U.S. and China: A Duel to the Debt (The Motley Fool) Posted: 08 Feb 2012 12:22 PM PST The Motley Fool - In this period of "exceptional uncertainty" (to quote Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke), where can investors turn for a considered perspective on the current environment? Produced to feed the beast of the 24-hour news cycle, the bulk of financial journalism and commentary today isn't worth the servers it is stored on. One notable exception to that rule is Buttonwood, the financial markets column of The Economist. Philip Coggan is the columnist -- arguably the most influential position in financial journalism (along with the head of Lex at the Financial Times).
