Mashable - People predicted rioting when Twitter decided to post ads within its feeds. However, those protests never materialized. Instead, Twitter was used to mobilize protests in the streets in Egypt, Yemen and Tunesia. The two instances are related. As Twitter became a globally recognized entity, it also began efforts to monetize itself earnestly in 2011. As previously mentioned, Twitter's successful introduction of advertising was one of the big social media marketing trends of the year. Despite warnings from some Twitter purists, users didn't seem to mind more ads on Twitter, perhaps concluding that Twitter was, after all, a for-profit business.

Digital Trends - According to a report out of Reuters, Verizon is investigating yet another outage of the data network. Noted as the third network outage during the month of December, some customers have reported an inability to connect to the 4G LTE network in a smattering of major U.S. cities including Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago and San Francisco.  Marquett Smith, vice president of corporate communications for Verizon Wireless, released a statement that the company is currently working to resolve the new issue with the 4G LTE network. He stated “The network continues to operate and all customers continue to be able to make calls, send text messages and utilize data services. 3G devices are operating normally.“

Reuters - Verizon Wireless is investigating reports that some customers were experiencing trouble accessing its fourth generation (4G) network, a spokesman told Reuters, as the company yet again had to face service problems with its faster wireless service.

Digital Trends - According to BitTorrent news site TorrentFreak, the fifth entry in the Fast and the Furious franchise took the top spot on the most pirated films of 2011. Fast Five, starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, had over nine million downloads over the course of the year. Close behind in second and third place, The Hangover Part II and Marvel’s Thor each had over 8 million downloads each. Other films on the top ten list included Source Code, I Am Number Four, Sucker Punch, 127 Hours, Rango, The King’s Speech and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

Report: iOS app downloads up 83 percent (Digital Trends)

Digital Trends - Market analysis firm Fiksu has released its analysis of of the aggregate download volumes of the top 200 free iOS applications and finds Apple has a lot to smile about: during November 2011, app downloads were up 83 percent compared to the same time a year ago. Fisku attributes the increase to the influx of new iPhone 4S customers, as well as apps updating to support iOS 5 and its new features.

IBM Releases Tool for New Kinds of Patent Searches (NewsFactor)

NewsFactor - A new analytical tool from IBM is helping scientists scan patents and other intellectual property for information about molecular data. The cloud-based strategic IP insight platform, or SIIP, uses image analysis and enhanced optical recognition of chemical images and symbols to quickly obtain the information, a process that otherwise could take months to do manually.
