| Unrest spreads to Morocco; police violently break up demonstrations Posted: Monday, May 23, 2011 Police, armed with batons and shields, were seen violently beating protesters and chasing them away. The protesters in Casablanca chanted "[p]rotest is a legal right, why is the Makhzen afraid?" in reference to the royal court, and "Makhzen get out. Down with despotism." Others chanted "[w]e want our rights, even if we are condemned to death," before fleeing to avoid armed police. More... |
| Pakistani militants take hostages in Karachi base revenge attack; ten soldiers killed Posted: Monday, May 23, 2011 Pakistani militants killed ten soldiers and injured fifteen more during an attack on PNS Mehran, a military base in Karachi, in a revenge strike after the killing of Osama bin Laden. Commandos have cleared the base of militants; three of the attackers were reported also to have been killed. There were initially reports that the militants had taken hostages, but officials later said that those captured had been rescued. More... |
