Woman partially paralysed by 'love bite'

Posted:

A Christchurch doctor has reported a case where a Maori woman was left partially paralysed by a love bite from her amorous partner.

Dr Teddy Wu, who is currently working in the neurology department at Christchurch Hospital, said he believed it was the first time someone had been hospitalised by a 'hickey'.

The 44-year-old woman went to the emergency department after experiencing loss of movement in her left arm.

It happened while she was sitting watching television.

The only injury was a love bite on the right of her neck near an artery.

"Because it was a love bite there would be a lot of suction," The Press quoted Wu as saying.

"Because of the physical trauma it had made a bit of bruising inside the vessel," said Wu.

"There was a clot in the artery underneath where the hickey was," Wu added.

The clot had gone into the woman's heart and caused a minor stroke that led to the loss of movement, he said.

She was treated with warfarin, an anticoagulant.

That treatment saw the clot disappear almost entirely within a week, he said.

An article on the case has appeared in the New Zealand Medical Journal.

ATM 'spits out' money

Posted:

Dozens of people flocked to a ATM machine in Dundee, Scotland after it started 'spitting out' money, it has emerged.

Police were called to the Scotmid branch in Fintry Road after staff noticed a crowd gathering outside the ATM at the front of the shop.

The machine was paying out double the amounts requested said a witness.

The ATM, which is operated by Bank Machine Ltd, was put out of commission shortly afterwards.

"The machine was spitting out money," the BBC quoted a witness, who asked not to be named, as saying.

"There were 50 or 60 people queuing outside the shop and people were running around with smiles on their faces, saying it was paying out double the amount people were asking for," he said.

Scotmid said the ATM was operated independently and was not connected to the store.

A spokesman said: "Some of our staff at our store noticed large queues forming outside and they became a bit concerned. They could not get close enough to the machine to check out what was going on so they did exactly the right thing and called the police."

Tayside Police confirmed they attended the scene, adding there had been no incidents.

Woman speaks after 11 years following voice box transplant

Posted:

A woman, who lives in California, has been able to speak for the first time in 11 years -- thanks to voice box transplant.

Brenda Jensen's voice box was damaged during an operation meaning she could only communicate through a hand-held electronic device and breathe through a hole in her neck.

A team of British and American surgeons conducted the delicate 18-hour surgery to replace her damaged larynx, thyroid gland, which controls the body's metabolism and a 6 cm section of windpipe.

Just 13 days later the 52-year-old patient was able to speak.

It is only the second time a larynx transplant has taken place with the first conducted at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio in 1998.

"This operation has restored my life," the Telegraph quoted Jensen as saying.

"I feel so blessed to have been given this opportunity. It is a miracle. I'm talking, talking, talking, which just amazes my family and friends.

"Every day is a new beginning for me.

"I'm working so hard to use my vocal cords and train my muscles to swallow. I'll probably never sing in a choir or anything, but it's exciting to talk normally, and I can't wait to eat and drink and swim again," Jensen added.

The operation was carried out in October last year at the University of California Medical Centre.

Although the voice box came from a female donor who was killed in an accident, Jensen's voice is her own and does not sound like her donor.

Shane Warne's secret rendezvous with Liz Hurley in LA

Posted:

Cricket legend Shane Warne has for the first time spoken - although briefly - about his relationship with Liz Hurley.

The spin king confirmed he hooked up with the sexy Brit in LA last weekend, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Warne has been trying to keep the reunion a secret after making a last-minute dash to the States to rendezvous with the glamorous star.

But he was ousted by an eagle-eyed reader who spotted Warne 'smiling' on a Qantas flight from LA to Melbourne on Sunday night.

When cornered at Crown Casino's Celebrity Challenge on Wednesday night, the former Australian Test player grinned: "Yeah, I know we've been busted".

"Next question," he said, when asked about the romance.

But pals at the benefit later revealed that Warne had confirmed things had gone "very well" over the weekend, rekindling the flame.

"Let's just say he was pretty happy," said one friend.

23 years on... US woman solves own baby kidnap

Posted:

The victim of a high-profile baby-snatching case has been reunited with her mother after solving the mystery of her abduction herself.

Carlina White was abducted from a hospital in Harlem in August 1987, when she was just 19 days old.

Carlina White never felt as if she belonged to her family and knew something was amiss

Raised as Nejdra Nance in Connecticut, White (23), always had a sense she did not belong to her family, police said, and began her own inquiries.

DNA tests this week confirmed Carlina as the daughter of Joy White. Police are now investigating the woman who raised Carlina.

'Did not belong'

Carlina was abducted from the hospital on 4 August 1987 after being taken there with a fever by her mother.
Joy White returned to the emergency room two hours after she was admitted, only to find Carlina's cot empty.

There were reports of a woman wearing nurse's clothing who had consoled the mother but who later picked up the baby and walked out of the building. Investigators could not find a breakthrough and the case went cold.

Nejdra Nance was then raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and later moved to Atlanta in Georgia. She finally found her picture of what she believed was herself on one of the missing children websites.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said, "She has held the view, for a long time, that she did not belong to the family she was living with."

The New York Police Department took over the investigation, arranging for DNA tests that on Tuesday proved White was the daughter of Joy White and Carl Tyson, who are now separated.

"I'm overwhelmed. I'm just happy. It's like a movie; it's all brand new to me," said Carlina.

Her 18-year-old half-sister, Sheena, who Carlina had not known existed until recently, said, "We spoke and got to know each other, and she looks exactly like my mom. It felt like we knew each other before we met."

Madeleine McCann

Film on Italian PM's sexcapades?

Sex-hungry politician in new Italian comedy movie Qualunquemente draws comparisons with scandal-plagued Silvio Berlusconi

A new Italian film portrays a flashy politician who loves easy sex and hates justice, but with the real prime minister embroiled in a prostitution scandal, critics say political reality is looking stranger than fiction.

The movie Qualunquemente hits Italian theatres this week, just as Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi battles a growing storm over allegations that he paid for sex with prostitutes.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi holds his face in his hand at the Villa Madama in Rome as he arrives for a meeting with Slovenia's President Danilo Turk

He says the charges are absurd and dreamed up by biased magistrates.

The film revolves around Cetto La Qualunque, a small-time fugitive who returns to his hometown in the southern region of Calabria and runs for mayor to combat what he considers a dangerous wave of law and order sweeping the coastal town.

Flanked by half-naked women, Cetto goes on the campaign trail with the intentionally shocking slogan "I have no dream, but I like p***y."

Off the trail, Cetto parties with topless women in a hot tub, frequents prostitutes and admiringly tells a bikini-clad woman, "Your lovely body qualifies you for town councillor."

Coming just as Italy grapples with leaked accounts of wild 'bunga bunga' parties at Berlusconi's home with prostitutes, the film has drawn sizable attention and more than a few snickers.

Complete fiction

"The filmmaker assures us it is a 'very funny' film, but the truth is that there's little to laugh at because reality now, more than ever has vastly overtaken fiction," film critic Fulvia Caprara wrote in a newspaper.

"The vulgar horrors on the screen are nothing compared to those we see mentioned in the accounts leaked to newspapers."

Comedian Antonio Albanese, who co-wrote the script and stars as Cetto, says the character was not influenced in the slightest by Berlusconi.

Indeed, the character was first created for a television show in 2003.

"I wanted to explain our country. It has disappointing things," he said. "But by making it funny, we can make the next generation understand that these people are ridiculous, that they are bad examples."

Impeccable in purple or white-striped suits, Cetto rants against justice ("Makes me sick'), taxes ("Like drugs") and culture, preferring prostitutes, golden bathtubs and a South American girlfriend who usurps his long-suffering wife's place.

Despite the filmmakers' denial of any links, some details in the film will be familiar to anyone following politics.
When police show up at Cetto's mayoral inauguration ceremony, he accuses the judiciary of trying to subvert the vote echoing a familiar complaint by Berlusconi.

Albanese agrees the release of the film, directed by Giulio Manfredonia, came at the right time.
