Australians rescued after cinema ceiling collapses Posted: Sixteen people are believed trapped in an Australian cinema after the roof partially collapsed after heavy rain, a report said Monday. Police confirmed that emergency services were at the scene in the regional centre of Bathurst, some 175 kilometres (110 miles) west of Sydney, but could not say whether any people were still inside the building. |
Average Briton 'tells three lies a day' Posted: Believe it or not, an average Briton tells three lies a day. This is according to a survey which found that it also doesn't matter to British adults what they fib about – whether it's where they are, what hours they're working or what chores they have carried out, or rather not carried out, at homes. |
China extending its footprints deep into Central Asia Posted: On the outskirts of this wind-scoured town, founded in 1893 as a Russian military post, the construction of a new customs compound heralds the return of another major power. When it opens this year, the sprawling new lot will accommodate much larger caravans of Chinese trucks than the existing trade depot, speeding the flow of clothing, electronics and household appliances that have lately flooded Central Asia, from nomadic yurts on the Kyrgyz steppes to ancient alleyways in Samarkand and Bukhara. |

India to be given key UNSC role in fight against terrorism Posted: India, which has joined the UN Security Council after a of gap of 19 years, is most likely to be given a key responsibility by this powerful 15-membered body in fight against terrorism; thus acknowledging New Delhi's prominent role in the global war against terror. Diplomatic sources privy to the discussions at the United Nations headquarters in New York told PTI talks are in advance stage to request India to head one of its two key counter-terrorism committees. |
Traditional Roman New Year's dive Posted: Five Italians on Saturday dived into the River Tiber in Rome from the Cavour Bridge, a height of more than 50 feet (17 metres). The event is a New Year tradition dating back to 1946, when a lifeguard who was trying to find work leapt into the waters from the Cavour Bridge to advertise his skills. Since then, it has caught on as an annual event. |

EPA limit on gases to pose risk to Obama and Congress Posted: With the federal government set to regulate climate-altering gases from factories and power plants for the first time, the Obama administration and the new Congress are headed for a clash that carries substantial risks for both sides. While only the first phase of regulation takes effect on Sunday, the administration is on notice that if it moves too far and too fast in trying to curtail the ubiquitous gases that are heating the planet it risks a Congressional backlash that could set back the effort for years. |
